Chapter 22

“Sophie, hurry!” Lian urged desperately.

“Shut up!” Sophie snapped. She knew it was a death blow. She’d seen it in Gayle’s face when she attacked—in Sky’s face when she drove her knife into his chest.

Sky had dropped to the ground the second Gayle had pulled the dagger from his chest. Lian caught Sky just in time, and laid him down on the ground quickly, but gently. Sophie rushed over, knelt down and leant over her brother. Sky had already lost consciousness. Sophie placed her hands over his heart and closed her eyes.

She could feel the damage that Gayle’s knife had done to Sky’s heart. She’d sliced right through the muscle.

“What’s taking so long?” Lian pushed.

“She got his heart,” Sophie muttered, trying to concentrate.

“I can’t feel a pulse,” Matu said worriedly. He was holding Sky’s right hand.

Sophie’s magic started flowing through her body and into her hands. There was still oxygen in his blood, just enough. Sophie just needed the blood to flow long enough for her to repair his heart. She knew she’d have less than a minute before she couldn’t bring her brother back anymore.

“Soph, there’s no pulse!” Matu shouted.

“Shut up!” Sophie shouted back. “He’s dead if you won’t shut up!”

That did it. The three boys went still. Sophie focused on the magic in her hands. She’d never used her magic for two different purposes simultaneously before, but she didn’t have a choice now. She forced part of her magic to keep the blood moving, while the other part she forced to work on the muscles of his heart. She could feel it working; she could feel the damaged heart pulling the pieces of muscle back together again. Sophie just hoped it was happening fast enough so that eventually the body would have enough strength to start up again by itself.

“Is it working?” Lian asked quietly.

“It has to,” Sophie hissed. “It has to…”

Sophie’s hands stopped glowing. The heart had healed, but it wasn’t beating. Her magic couldn’t do that. Her magic couldn’t heal the dead. Her magic couldn’t bring a heart back from flatlining. The heart had to start beating on its own again.

Or with a little old-fashioned help.

Sophie placed both of her hands over Sky’s heart and started compressions.

“Come on, come on,” she whispered. She could feel the eyes of her brothers on her as she moved. She couldn’t think about the possibility of failing. He couldn’t die. He was Sky bloody Mayne. He was her brother.

Sophie was concentrating so hard that she barely heard the conversation around her.

“I’m going after her,” Nathan was saying.

Sophie wanted to stop and scream at Nate not to be an idiot, but she couldn’t possibly do anything that took her attention away from the chest compressions. The second she stopped, Sky would be dead.

“Nate, no,” Matu said strongly.

“I have a plan. We went about it all wrong. You have to trust me,” Nathan replied.

“You can’t risk it. You saw what happened here,” Lian said, backing Matu up.

“I felt it, too. I saw it coming,” Nathan said.
